Which Version to Install?
I had to re-configure my PC yet again.
It is a Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit brand new install.
I've used Doomsday before so I'm not totally unfamiliar with it.
The specs of my machine are attached. It's a decent system, but the display and graphics aren't.
Thoughts?
Thanks...

It caused the Start button to disappear and I never did get the game to even open. It seemed to load ok, but running a game it gave a black screen. It had sound, but a totally black screen.
So, I'm a little reluctant to go through all of that with this version.
Other suggestions?
I found out the culprit of the missing Start button problem.
It was not doomsday as I suspected. It was another program that I must have opened at about the same time I was trying to install doomsday. It's a program I have been using for 15 years, or more. That was the problem.
Wanted to set the record straight for you, and anyone else that runs across this post.
I had this version on my previous Win 7 Ultimate and while problematic with Scythe I could play the other DOOM games ok.
This machine (Win 7 Pro....fresh install ~ 1 month or so) this version won't run.
Doomsday.out file attached.
I only loaded the original DOOM (1) game and there is either a black screen and sound, or there is just an outlined window only where the desktop shows, and the sound works.
I'm assuming the game will 'play' because I can close it easily enough since I have the keystrokes memorized: Esc, Q, enter, y.
I have tried a number of combinations of settings in the Graphics and Display options, but no luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Have you tried disabling fsaa with the '-nofsaa' command line option as suggested here?:
http://www.dengine.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2216
On the "-nofsaa" part, I have not tried it. Can this be added to Snowberry somehow?
Thanks -
Edit: I found this from skyjake when I had troubles before with another machine:
fizixx wrote:
How do you use the -nofsaa switch you suggested before? Where does it get placed?
If you're running Doomsday 1.15 or earlier, so you're using the Frontend, the "-nofsaa" option can placed in the Settings tab > Developer > Custom options field.
I did that, then tried to start the game...no luck.
I went back into the Doomsday folders and deleted the "persist.pack" from the runtime folder...no luck.
Lastly, here's doomsday.out again. I set the verbosity to level 2 (debug) this time, in case there's anything that shows up. I tried to add it with the "CODE" option, but the file was too large so I attached it.
What's frustrating is, I ran this game and this version with my previous Win 7 64 bit Ultimate machine, and it never did run Scythe, it ran the others just fine, but with this same machine but with win 7 pro I'm getting a black screen.
BUT having read through your old thread I can see it's the exact same card and driver version you had it running on before... So at this point I'm pretty much out of ideas.
One last thought: Did you try the '640x480 safe mode' that worked for you before?
Yeah, I'm beyond frustrated. Yeah, DOOM was working well before, although I hadn't gotten Scythe to work, but that's another matter. So it SHOULD work now, but it doesn't.
Just a few minutes ago I uninstalled "doomsday_1.10.4_64_bit.exe" completely (manually removed everything the uninstaller doesn't get --- ugh) and I installed "doomsday_1.10.0.exe".
Those files were when I had this problem x months ago, and one of these was the one that was working, and that was the one I had trouble with Scythe.
So after installing that other version I'm getting the same thing. Black screen, tried the "-nofsaa" switch, deleting the persist.pack or whatever it is and playing with the 'settings' in Snowberry.
Now, if by 640x480 mode you mean the setting in Snowberry, yes I tried that. I tried the Anisotropic setting and the other settings....and nothing. Black screen. Sound works. I can close the game just fine, but there is no video at all.
Here's one last shot at the doomsday.out:

Stopping GuiApp event loopI was going to create another new post, but I don't think it's going to help. if there aren't any other ideas I'm going to uninstall Doomsday and go with another source port.
I refuse to believe that a fresh install of Windows 7, (64) is unable to drive this game. I've installed it in Safe Mode. I've installed it with the AV off, I've followed all the bits and pieces I can find in the forums, I've changed settings in most, if not all the combinations and STILL a black screen?! wtf is that!?
I know the machine will run it, and if there's any other ideas to check I will, because I do like this source port, but I'm not going to go without playing the game.
I appreciate that you've gone through old posts trying to help, so thank you!
I assumed my post had just been abandoned because it was too difficult a problem for others to solve, which is why, if I don't get this going today, I really have no choice but to go to another port. DOOM is a great escape. I've been playing it since ~1995, and I've gone too long screwing around with this nonsense to just give up.....yanno?
I looked and found vid cards for cheaper than I thought. What do you all think about a card like this:
The current incarnation of their Driver Update Utility (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... etect.html) works pretty well for me.
(I've got a C2D/Intel 965 I can try to test on - but windows10/LinuxMint)
I'd expect most any AMD/NVIDIA card made in the last, what, 8 years should work? $30-$50 USD, update the drivers and done.
