Hexen Deathkings of the Dark Citadel won't run! [Resolved]

I got a problem with the Hexen expansion. I can't get it to work in anyway. Hexen runs perfectly fine on Doomsday KickStart 2.09 but when i try to launch the expansion (i got all WAD files in C:\Doomsday\WADS\HEXEN+DOTDC in the same Folder) it tells me 1. This game requires the file HEXDD.WAD, and it should be placed in the same folder as the main game IWAD file, HEXEN.WAD
Game will not run until this file will be in the right place! ( of course i got the WAD files all named like this and in the same Folder) But if I switch with the dropdown button to Hexen and put the Hexdd.wad file there it works but without any music at all?

Any Idea to fix this?

  • i have never got this to work even with the current betas with snowberry witch i did everything right but to no avail.
  • I can assure you that Deathkings of the Dark Citadel does indeed work (I have just tested the latest build #294). However there is a known issue with the current MAPINFO parser in recent releases which affects the map progression and music track orders. So it is not really playable atm.
  • how do you load it then? if i have the wad as the path then it crash's with no error but windows saying the standerd application has erred and needs to close.

  • You seem to be loading all manner of addons (many of which appear to be for DOOM rather than Hexen) and there are numerous warnings printed in your log about them. First thing I suggest you try is disabling them all and try loading the standard game.
  • Ok i played it through right now, well some epic backpipe metal works as well but i would prefer the original audio instead. I had no problems with the Maps nor the Mapnames. I don't know but i have read that the Audio Tracks for the Addon is played directly from the CD!

    PS.: 2 out of 10 times i get an error that I have to increase -maxzone. Now what is this and how does it affect the game in anyway?
  • the addons are not the problem when i can load hexen and heretic just fine. it's only the hexen expansion i have never been able to get working. but i can try with everything disabled. my prediction is 90% failure.

    Doomsday 1.8.6, which I guess you are using, requires the user to allocate memory before they start the engine. Under the Misc tab in Kickstart you will find a memory field. Raise this to 256mb (the max for 1.8.6) and HeXen DK will be fine.

    The 1.9 betas of Dday (which Gordon is using btw, so if you are using 1.8.6, you can ignore the issue he and DaniJ are going on about) don't require the user to allocate memory; they dynamically allocate it themselves in game (and support more than 256mb). Of course beta means beta.

    The original HeXen and HeXen DK both had CD Audio support (In Dday you can make all the games use CD audio with a little work); insert a CD and that will be used in the place of the default music.

    V1.0 of HeXen DK however, had a bug in its music lump that meant non CD music didn't work. Dday, as of writing, still uses said music lump, so if you are running HeXen DK V1.0 on Dday, you won't get non CD music. A patch was released by Raven that fixes this issue (and by extension in Dday); as far as I am aware there was never a commercial release of HeXen DK with this patch included, so every HeXen DK user needs the patch to get non CD music.

  • That is the correct way to load Deathkings. hexdd.wad is not an IWAD, it is an addon for Hexen.

    Have you updated your copy of Deathkings with the v1.1 patch Vermil posted about (available here)?
  • yes. but no music but every other place that has it works just fine.
  • I got quite a dumb question, but do I need the game installed on my PC for the Patch??? I have the original CD in the attic but to find it it will cost me 6 hours of my live (quite a mess up there)!
  • You don't need the original install disk, just hexdd.wad and the patch. Copy it and the contents of the patch zip archive into the same folder and run patch.exe
  • That's good news. I downloaded the patch for the wad, and well i doesn't work. I opened it with DosBox included the File and it says:"Old File not Found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match". Since i played the whole game with this Wad, and it's the original Wad from the CD, what am I doing wrong?
  • Perhaps your copy has already been patched? I'm not sure but perhaps Raven made a production run including the patch.
  • if that was true then why is the steam version still needing the patch would it not be best to have the steam version patched as well?
  • I unzipped the patch files into the same directory as both the original hexen wad and the hexendd wad and then ran the patch.exe file and it worked perfectly! Now dk has music finally. I literally spent several days scowering the internet downloading various patches and versions of the game trying to get the music to work before finding this thread; which is the only thing that worked.

    Thank you whoever wrote that and thanks daniJ for putting that link up.

    P.S. this is using doomsday 1.9.9 which so far has worked flawlessly for me whereas all the other doomsday versions I always had some kind of problem.
