Performance so bad is unplayable

edited 2016 Aug 24 in Technical Support
Here's my processor info:

Processor & Memory
Intel Pentium D 925
Specification Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz
Core Speed 2392.1 MHz
Multiplier x Bus Speed 12.0 x 199.3 MHz
Rated Bus speed 797.4 MHz
Stock frequency 3000 MHz

6 GB RAM
I recently (days ago) downloaded and installed Version 1.13 for "Windows 7 Ultimate", 64 bit.

I cannot find the doomsday.out file. I have looked through each folder in the Doomsday folder/subfolders. I have done searches for it, and it does not seem to be here.

When I launch the game it is very, very slow. The graphics don't align properly. The floor will mix in with the walls, and you can see through some places in the walls (and I don't mean windows! lol). The weapons will change, they will fire, but moving is so slow you can't play the game, and even if you could the graphics are so bad you can't tell what's what.

Here's my graphics info:

Also there are 3 messages in "Log filters & Alerts"

1) Cannot find HELP2
2) Failed to locate lump for "Patches:HELP2"
3) GL_Ext_Packed_Depth_Stencil missing

Can you see anything in all this that will address this?

Thanks

  • look in the documents folder for doomsday frontend or find it in i think apps/roaming and you will find it there. now on to what your seeing post a pic or in my world it did not happen, also it seems your on a laptop and if thats the case dday has had a storied history with laptops not working so well but it might have changed as i do not know the working state on a laptop since i do not play on one.
  • Considering your system specs with regard to graphics, I would recommend going back to one of the older Doomsday releases, for example 1.10.4. The recent releases require pretty modern OpenGL drivers.
  • Gordon....thanks.....I actually found the file. I guess they didn't hide it good enough.

The file is corrupt. Message says windows can't access it.

    Par for the course.

Every time I do ANYTHING with this program, it's days of hassle. It's uber frustrating.

Thank you for the help. I appreciate it.
  • skyjake...

Thank you. I will look into this and see if it helps.

    :)
  • use any word app to load it as it's just a text document.

Gordon, thanks for the info. I don't know why the "doomsday.out" did not show up in the search before, but it did this time....don't understand why.

I managed to get a screenshot. It's DOOM II, 1st level, Entryway. You can see the garbled room. The game plays reeeeeeeeeal slow.

This isn't a laptop, it's a PC, the version of D-Day is for Windows 7 (PC), 64 bit, which is what I have.

The machine I had a few weeks ago was an XP SP3 and I had the last build of D-Day that would work with it and it ran great. I usually don't go in and 'tweak' things, other than just setting up the game controls I like.

    Hi Skyjake....

Thanks...I'm going to wait and see what Gordon has to say about my doomsday.out and screenshot. I'm gonna save that page, in case I need it. I hope I can make what I have work. I miss playing my games, and this engine was so much fun when I had my XP machine (few weeks ago).
  • well i had a look and this was odd "GLFramebuffer: GL_EXT_packed_depth_stencil" it looks like you are missing stuff for play but i do not know if thats what's causing all your problems or not but right now thats the biggest culprit atm. it could also be something with your intel gfx but that stems from missing resources but the good news is this is the only problem.
  • Gordon....

Thanks. I think at this point I am going to try skyjake's suggestion and uninstall my current version of DD and install 1.10.4 and see if that addresses the prob you're talking about, and maybe it does have something to do with my graphics/drivers system.

    Hopefully I won't be back :)
  • lets hope and it's always a good idea to test with lower versions till you get to the version before the one that failed. what i mean by that is lets say 1.14 failed then you know the one before that one worked lets just say thus we would have a good idea whats going on and what fixes we can implement or rather the deng team can.

    Agreed.

Everything went well, it loads, it's 'alive' and it's playable but it's slow to respond. The game probably could be played, but it would be slow and probably not a lot of fun.

I included the doomsday.out file. I'm guessing, or maybe hoping this is now down to a setting, which I'm hoping you have a silver bullet for ??

I did tick the box to 'disable anisotropic filtering'.

I also noticed that the map doesn't show under the maps tab. I noticed that on the previous version as well, and then later on....they showed up, and in some cases the maps were incorrect, even tho I'm certain I selected the correct ones during set-up.

    Ideas?

    Thank you
  • there is an option to turn of AA but i do not know it.

    The option is "-nofsaa".

If the aforementioned "-nofsaa" option doesn't speed things up, and using a lower display resolution doesn't help either, it could be that your Intel GMA graphics chipset doesn't isn't fast enough for Doomsday's needs.
  • Greetings - I don't know if this will help - but I had video performance issues with v2.0 as well.
Reverting to 1.10 resolved the issues, but I wanted to test out 2.0.
One of the things that helped was switching from full-screen to a window, which was not as much of a sacrifice as I expected as I was able to run within a fairly large window (1920x1080).
Another thing I did was in Renderer->Camera Lens I tweaked pixel doubling and also bloom.
Also in video settings I disabled antialias.
One other thing I noticed was that on my poor old machine if I had other programs running, even in the background, they seemed to suck up gpu cycles.
Obviously some or none of this may apply to your setup, and I am absolutely no DE expert!!! Just a big fan!
Also, the stuff I tried was from suggestions by SkyJake (credit where it is due! I know none of this stuff!)

Hope you get a decent working setup!

PS: For me, 1.15 builds seemed to work far better in terms of video performance than 2.0 builds - but I would stress that this is because I don't have a very high-powered graphics card nor a powerful workstation!!! And of course as SkyJake has stated, the wonderful new 2.0 DE is more demanding of graphics performance!
  • Hi DavidInvenio.....

    Thanks for the ideas.

I looked through all the settings I could find and did not see the renderer/camera lens settings.

I already have all the antialiasing stuff turned off, but that doesn't help.

The game-play is jittery. I don't have motion-sickness issues, but trying to play the game with it like this makes me queasy! lol

I've tried making resolution changes, I tried turning VSync off/on but nothing addresses the jitter.

When I began this thread I thought I could download the latest version, but that was so bad the floor, ceiling, wall graphics all ran into each other. It was like playing the salvadore Dali version of DOM...lol

Skyjake recommended this earlier version, which I have, and it helped, but it's not fully there. What I don't get is, I use to play this on an old XP SP# machine and it was great, and now I have an upgraded machine and can't get it to work? That sucks.

Hi skyjake...I don't think I saw your comment come in.

I'm afraid I don't know what to do with the "-nofsaa" you mentioned.

If I was able to play the game on an old XP machine just fine, then why can't I get it to perform just as well on an upgraded win7 64-bit machine?

    Thank you
  • it's a known problem that evan modren macines need to turn aa off and that command he gave you is for start up by adding it after doomsday.exe so it should look like c:\...\doomsday\bin\doomsday.exe -nofsaa
  • Gordon....

I'm not having a lot of luck with this I guess.

Thank you for the string. I must be doing something dumb.

    I located the "Doomsday.exe" in:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Doomsday\bin\doomsday.exe

Added the 'switch' (-nofsaa) to the end of that string, but that gives an error immediately. Can't even close that dialog box.

If I right-click the "doomsday engine" icon on my desktop (where I launch the game from normally) and add that switch in the following way:

=> "C:\Program Files (x86)\Doomsday\snowberry\snowberry.exe" -nofsaa, quotes and all....the game runs but there's no difference. Still the same jitter.

I'm afraid slow-walking me to an epiphany isn't getting me there (sorry)...I'm just not skilled with this kind of thing.

If you have an orange crayon and can draw a picture, that's probably what it will take. I've been working on this now for about 5 hours, and that's just today.

I'm sure it's something simple, and probably something I'm doing wrong...

    ugh
  • FYI

I have been trying to follow the suggestions on this page http://wiki.dengine.net/w/How_to_run_Doomsday_on_old_hardware, to address my problem and I thought I would try making the "Use a 16-bit video mode." change that shows up last in the list.

Doing this hosed things up so badly I can't even see the game-screen now. It's black, and now I can't UNDO it.

Anyone have an easier way to fix THIS problem besides my uninstalling and then manually going through windows and deleting the files the 'uninstaller' misses and then reinstalling this yet again?
  • I don't know anything at all about anything fizixx but I looked through all the files I could think of to see if there was a way to set it to default to 32 but I didn't see anything... so I thought maybe instead you could tell the game to open in a window and also force it to the 640 safe resolution and MAYBE you get lucky! :D It probably won't work and someone else will definitely have a better idea but if you see this before someone smart answers maybe you could try it. :p

It all depends on your video card (or embedded graphics chipset, if you don't have a discrete video card). According to the logs you've posted, Doomsday is using an Intel GMA chipset. This is a chipset intended for basic desktop acceleration, and I wouldn't recommend using it with Doomsday. It's slower than even old Nvidia/AMD cards.

Do you remember which video card or graphics chipset you were using in the old machine?

First, thanks "Since1876". It was at '32'. I changed it to '16', and it rendered the screen black. SO I can't change it back. I guess I will uninstall and think about this.

    SKYJAKE....

How do you use the -nofsaa switch you suggested before? Where does it get placed?

To answer your question, the XP machine used a GeForce FX 5600...something like that.

Oh ok, so there's no video card in this computer? CPU-Z says the graphics is:
    Graphics
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Number of adapters 1

    Graphic APIs
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Win32_VideoController DriverVersion = 8.15.10.1930
    Win32_VideoController DriverDate = 09/23/2009

If this is what the problem is, is there an earlier version, or settings I can use until I can get a video card? Also, is there a specific type card? I don't want anything high-end, so I'd have to get a refurb over the net I guess.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you
  • any vid card with dedicated ran will do so long as it's at least 512 tho you could go lower but i am thinking other games wise here as well.
  • fizixx wrote:

If you're running Doomsday 1.15 or earlier, so you're using the Frontend, the "-nofsaa" option can placed in the Settings tab > Developer > Custom options field.
Name Intel(R) Q965/Q963 Express Chipset Family
Yeah, that is an integrated graphics chipset and it is not suitable for gaming.
If this is what the problem is, is there an earlier version, or settings I can use until I can get a video card?
Well, I would still recommend 1.10.4, although it is getting a bit outdated feature-wise. In terms of graphics, though, it should be mostly compatible with older OpenGL drivers.
Also, is there a specific type card? I don't want anything high-end, so I'd have to get a refurb over the net I guess.
I would recommend an Nvidia card with a retail price of $100 at a minimum (new). That won't get you amazing performance, though. However, high-end PC gamers tend to replace their video cards quite often, so you might find relatively recent used video cards floating around the net, though.
  • SKYJAKE....

Thanks for this info. While I was awaiting a reply, I uninstalled 1.10.4 and installed 1.10.0. I don't think this really helped anything, but I think what "Since1876" mentioned about 640x480 is what did the trick...sort of. From the desksktop shortcut to the Doomsday Engine Frontend, and in the Settings tab I found the force safe 640x480, and now the game runs smoothly. I have loaded Doom and Doom II and both run fine.

So I will ask this....the aspect ration is now off a bit. Things are slightly elliptical with things being squashed a bit top-to-bottom. I've tried other settings, but haven't seemed to find the right setting.....ideas??

Also, I have Scythe and Scythe 2. I ran both on the other machine (XP) but I'm not getting them to go now. I haven't spent a great deal of time messing with this, but frankly I'm burned out. If anyone has any ideas to successfully load these two wad files I'd appreciate it. I'm tired of screwing with settings. I tried to add the scythe profile, and then associate the wad file, but when the game tries to load it gives the console and says 0 of 8 games playable. I deleted the profile, but the wad file still shows in the map tab....ugh.

Thanks for all your help :)
  • Ok, so now Plutonia and TNT don't work.

Plutonis, TNT, Scythe and Scythe2 won't run. I get that annoying console crap instead of just loading the game.

The only games that do work (as far as I know) are Doom and Doom II.

Here's the doom.out if it helps anyone.

Well.. It looks like you're trying to load the plutonia iwad in the tnt game mode (the '-game' option says 'doom2-tnt' but the '-iwad' option says 'plutonia.wad'). Also you're trying to load the plutonia iwad as an addon/pwad which you shouldn't do.

If you're launching from snowberry make sure to use the following settings to load plutonia:
-Select the Plutonia profile to the left.
-Make sure that the plutonia.wad is not referenced in either the 'maps' tab or the 'addons' tab.
-On the 'settings' tab: Set 'Game Component' to 'libdoom', set 'Game Mode' to 'Final Domm: Plutonia Experiment', and point 'Game data file' to the plutonia.wad iwad file.
