  • I found in my case the music was getting dropped randomly because of another addon I had been using: Kurikai's "semi-real" skybox1. Once I deleted that from my addons folder, I've not had any problems with music addons since.

It may not be the fault of the skybox addon, but to be safe, one should always disable all other addons when testing a music pack.

Edit: Also wanted to point out that I seem to recall having trouble getting 128kbps mp3's to work. Once I changed to 160kbps mp3 compression, no more problems there as well.

Strange, but I've already tried running the PSX music a fresh install of beta 6.7 and no addons, and the music still drops. Firebrand, check your PMs!
  • Today I've been looking into the reported problems with non MUS/MIDI music loaded from WAD lumps. I am testing with the in-development 1.9.0-beta6.8 release which under Windows has seen SDL_mixer updated to the latest version; 1.2.11.

I've tested both .OGG and .MP3 using music files from my own media collection and each time the music played as expected on Windows Vista x64 using SDL_mixer for playback.

However, I have found that under Ubuntu 9.10 that the same WAD does NOT work when using SDL_mixer. Last I knew though, Ubuntu has yet to package SDL_mixer 1.2.11 so this issue may be due to a problem that has since been addressed in SDL_mixer.

EDIT: It would seem this issue is due to the old problem of SMPEG not understanding ID3 tags in MP3s (which SDL_mixer wraps). I'm currently looking into the possibility of wrapping http://massid3lib.sourceforge.net/ in Doomsday to circumvent the problem.

EDIT2: I've began a new thread on the MP3s From WAD Lumps issue at the blog.

EDIT3: So it would seem the reason for the problem with broken MP3 Lump playback is the old ID3 tag issue with SDL_mixer (in smpeg.lib). This issue was fixed as of SDL_mixer 1.2.9 meaning that as Doomsday 1.9.0-beta6.8 has been updated to use SDL_mixer 1.2.11 the problem will be fixed (at least on Windows) for the next release.
  • That is great news, Dani. I really hope this fixes the issue this time! I'm considering getting back into some Dooming after this next beta release, assuming there aren't any major bugs.
  • There are a few remaining annoying issues (mainly the wallrun problem) but otherwise the 1.9.0-beta6.8 release is quite playable.

I had hoped to get the Windows release packaged and available before now but I'm currently tied up doing the web server migration. With luck I'll be able to move on to building the beta6.8 release soon.
  • I'm still looking up to this engine, as it's the best one out, in terms of graphics and customization.
As there is a lot of supported things (Three-Dimensional models, shine maps and even detail textures**!) but there's always the problem with DE nowadays, and that's the inactivity problem.

Few members are active, not to mention contributors. :((

And there's a little "bug" with the website, which sends you to this if you don't make the URL like this*. :|

And a off-topic question.. Where is it just that you post your questions?

    * - Detailed explanation; The dengine.net URL must have www in front of it. http://www.dengine.net/*

** - Or maybe the detail textures are bugged..
