Doomsday 1.4 Music doens't play right

Hi everyone, I have started to use Doomsday but the music won't won't.
I tried multiple sound drivers, but only the intro theme plays and repeats itself.

Comments

  • Don't run the old JDEP add-on with modern Doomsday; download the 'Slides Skyboxes' add-on, which is an updated version of the same add-on that works with modern Doomsday.
  • Doesn't work. if it isn't compatible, is there another resource pack?

    EDIT: I tried Heretic, and the music works fine.
  • I guess I'll try an pre snow berry version.
  • Have you experimented with the different sound drivers Dday supports (in Snowberry one can change the driver used under the 'sounds' tab, which can be found under 'settings'

    Can you paste the contents of your Doomsday.out file (in code tags)?

    The out file is a log of everything Dday did the last time you launched it and can be found in 'snowberry/runtime'.

    You can also increase the amount of information printed in the log through Snowberry, with the 'verbose messages' option under 'settings', then 'developer'. Bear in mind that increasing the verbosity of the log might have a little impact on performance.

  • I think I can see the the Direct Sound plugin being loaded as audio plugin; that plugin doesn't support music.

    Rememeber that Snowberry allows you to set options both globally and on a game by game basis; check the audio plugin field on both the shared settings and on the Doom profile specifically.

  • I've just confirmed that the problem persists on every doom game. However, in Plutonia, TNT and in the custom WAD Plutonia 2 I get no music in the beginning, of the game. After I finish the 1st level, the victory theme plays repeatedly, even after beating multiple levels.

    Edit: I just tested something else. If I LOAD a saved game, it's the intro music that constantly being repeated.
  • Your doomsday.out clearly shows you are attempting to use the old jDEP add-on in addition to Slide's skybox add-ons. This jDEP add-on is not compatible with the Doomsday 1.9.x series and results in music not being played and the episode endings not working correctly (uninstalling it should fix both issues).

  • You are definitely running the jDEP, it is being loaded from your /auto folder (in general I advise not using /auto for this purpose for the very reason it is easy to forget what is in there).

  • Well, I've uninstalled ANY addons (right click on add on and uninstall) and neither problems have been solved.
    While we are diagnosing the problem, may I ask why aren't they supported in the first place and why they are on the add on part?
  • You can't uninstall an add-on in the /auto directory from the front end, you have to actually remove said files from the /auto directory manually.

    The reason that add-on is not supported is because it is missing data definitions for the music and the episode endings (hence your problems).

    As I said, you have to remove them manually from your Doomsday install directory, not the Doomsday Frontend directory.

    Still, it seems I was right all along as to the cause of the problem, to point back to my first reply in this topic and the second post :)

    Since this is an issue that comes up semi often, I think a note should be added to the notes section on the Dday Add-ons page that states that 'Slides Skyboxes' is the new version of the JDEP; the change in name might be confusing people into thinking they are different add-ons and the in hindsight poorly chosen 'J' prefix makes the JDEP seem 'official' and hence people may think the latest version will always work with the latest Dday. If you get what I mean.

    Maybe the 'J' prefix should be removed from all the add-on names that still use it, on the Dday site?
  • Maybe, but I notice that the sky add on isn't as through as the DEP one. The monsters and the weapons models are the old ones from the original DOOM.

    We don't distribute the jDEP as it doesn't work any more. Originally the 'j' prefix was intended as an 'official' endorsement of an add-on, it was intended to say to users "this add-on has been tested and verified by Deng team". However, what happened is that this convention was hijacked and everyone started applying it to their add-ons without us even having looked at it. Consequently that convention is now pretty much meaningless.

    The jDEP add-on has nothing to do with monsters and weapons, all it (and the replacement 'Slide's skybox **' add-ons) changes are the skies. For the monsters and weapons you need the jDRP or similar.

    Indeed, I am well aware of the history of Dday's add-ons and the original purpose of the 'J' prefix. I skipped over that bit because I knew you were aware of such as well.

    What I was getting at was that removing the 'J' prefix from all add-ons on the Dday site, that still use it, might help Dday distance itself from it, given that the prefix no longer means what it once did.

    Since people keep trying to run the JDEP with modern Dday, for whatever reason (there are several threads on this forum where people are having music issues that turned out to be because they were running the JDEP with modern Dday), I was also suggesting a note be added to the Slides Skybox add-ons on the Dday website stating that 'they are the updated version of the old JDEP add-on'.

  • The jDRP on the Dday website should work perfectly with modern Dday, taking into account the possibility of bugs in Dday it'self.
  • You mean the one in big that says "jDRP" (packaged) next to DOOM HQ soundtrack? I believe that this is the one I tried using. I'll try again.

    Those should all work with modern Dday. If they don't in any way, make a thread about it as it may be a bug in the current version of Dday or the add-on may need updating.
  • Yeah, that's the one I tried. Wierd. maybe I got confused from all of the shortcuts that I accidentally installed the old ones
  • It's worth noting, that you may have to go into the control panel (accessible from the options menu in game) and turn on models. You can enable/disable many of Dday's visual features through the control panel and obviously, if models are turned off in the control panel, they won't display even if you are running a model pack.
