Assistance with my Wad

edited 2011 Nov 21 in Technical Support
I've been working on my modified wad for a few years. I built a new pc a few years ago and transferred my work. Mainly levels and sounds with a few new sprites and monsters. I've used the latest beta available. Now I get several issues. Mainly random Segmentation Violations when certain sounds are spiked. GETPOW and my new explosion sound. some of the other sounds are just scratches and hisses. If I change the sound driver I either get no music, or low/high sampled sounds. I'm not sure what's going on. I don't think my wad's corrupted, for everything else looks fine. I've tried different betas and different computers with Vista 32 and my main which is 7 pro 64 with an xfi titanium sound card. I use Wintex 5 and doombuilder 1. The last working computer was Windows xp 32 with basic sound and a pentium 4HT.

I'd greatly appreciate any help! Thanks

  • As I indicated to yourself on Doomworld, without the actual sounds, one can only speculate. Check the Doomsday.out file for any strange message regarding the sound effect right before the seg violation (Dday will sometimes indicate why it can't play a sound, in the console log/Dday out file).

    It could well be the particular audio driver you have set Dday to use. Though I will say that in Beta 6.9, only SDL Mixer currently gives both music and sound. This is a temporary regression due to the rewrite of Dday. Of course SDL Mixer produces considerably lower quality sound than say Direct Sound.

    Certainly, unlike at Doomworld, you mention sounds instead play distortion; this is an indication that Dday can't up sample the sound in question to the quality you selected in the control panel; I have experienced this with Dday's up sampling sound effects that are odd sample rates to 22 or 44 kHz myself. Said sounds would play fine when I set the up sampling rate to 11 kHz however. I didn't think this was associated with the audio driver one was using (i.e. it would occur no matter the audio driver), but maybe someone from Deng team can shed some light on that one.
  • This is the last line of my error log: I'm using the latest beta with DirectSound and 11Hz with 16 bit sounds off and 3D sounds off.

    Partial Invisibility
    dsDirectSound::DS_SFX_CreateBuffer: Failed creating buffer [rate:-21436 bits:8].
    Segmentation Violation

    I guess all I may need to do is turn down (GetPow sound) to a lower sampling rate or higher bit depth.
