ZDoom (Doom in Hexen format) - Incompatible?

I have a new map I'm working on that's being made in ZDoom (Doom in Hexen format). I usually test my progress in GZDoom but decided to see what it looked like in Doomsday, just for the heck of it. Well, it seems that Doomsday can't detect or read the WAD file. I only see it in my list of maps if I set "Show All" under the filter in the Addons tab. My question: Are maps made in this format not compatible with Doomsday? Or is there a way to play it in Doomsday that I'm not seeing?

  • try the -file *.wad it will work if you have the wad in the right place but you may never go back to the original unless you move it from there as thats what i found out.

Where do I put that at for Doomsday? I can see a preview of the command line but not edit it. And where exactly is the "right place" to put WADs? I've been putting them in the Addons folder, as well as just in the main Doomsday folder. (not at the same time, though)
  • if it's a doom wad they would go in the data\jdoom folder and for where you put the -file look under setting under development and then find custom options this is all in snowberry

Thats not at all necessary. You can put addons absolutely anywhere you want, provided you supply Doomsday with a valid path to their location. I never install anything into the Doomsday directory other than the app itself.

I was getting "file not found" errors when I put the WAD anywhere else, though. For some reason, placing it inside the jdoom folder finally allowed Snowberry to find it and let me play. Although it was mostly pointless, as I suspected -- pretty much all the Z/GZDoom features don't work, such as 3D slopes, custom monsters using DECORATE, and several other things that rely on ACS scripting. Unless I'm mistaken on this; correct me if I'm wrong. For the stuff that did work though (default monsters, hi-res textures, actual models for keys and such), they did look pretty cool. So playing standard Doom/Doom 2 in the Doomsday Engine was awesome. It just doesn't seem to like some of the features I'm using for my map is all.
  • You should point Snowberry to the locations you have addons installed rather than place the addons in the Doomsday install directory.

DOOM in Hexen format is not supported, your mod is not compatible sorry.
  • I am curious about your WAD, care to share it?

It's still in extremely early stages. I just started working on it around the 28th of last month, and there's maybe 5 rooms so far. Pretty basic at this point. Whenever I do get to the point where it's ready for some beta testing though, I'll post it up on the Doomworld Forums (http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/) to get some feedback. Keep an eye out for it there, but it may be a while before it's ready for that. If you'd like, I can send you a PM here with a link when it's up for beta testing.
  • Sure, I'll go with a PM here.
