I just noticed that the entire catalog of id Software games is now available on Steam. I think this is excellent news, because these classic games will now be conveniently available to new and veteran players alike. Ready your credit cards and warm up the BFGs!

However, this wasn't the most interesting piece of id related news I've heard recently (no, I'm not talking about "Rage", though it does sound promising). I am in fact referring to the announcement that a new (internal!) development team has been formed to produce a completely free incarnation of Quake3Arena, to be funded entirely by in-game advertising.
