Hi Quality Sound Pack Crash / Hang

edited 2011 Jun 14 in Technical Support
When I try to use the Hi Quality sound pack on the latest unstable build under Linux, Doomsday either hangs or aborts (no error message, no protection fault). Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround please?

  • Does it freeze/abort when it attempts to play a particuar sound or when Dday starts up?

Certinally, I know that Dday 1.8.6 will freeze when it tries to play the teleporter sound from the pack.
  • It hangs / crashes tryiong to make the first 'clunk' sound when you hit escape to bring up the main menu.
  • So, the very first sound effect to play...

To confirm that it isn't just the main menu open sound specifically (as mentioned the teleporter sound, specifically, crashed 1.8.6 for me), try using the console warp command to bypass the main menu (type "warp 1" in the console). From there you can test if a bunch of other sounds; the pistol sound, the zombie awake sounds, weapon pickup sound from the nearby chainsaw, crash beta 6.9).

Also, check if the Doomsday.out file isn't displaying an error message; just because DDay isn't displaying an error message on the screen, doesn't mean it didn't print an error message to the console (DDay prints an error message to the console if a sound isn't in a format it recognizes for instance, though it shouldn't crash).

I'll be honest and say that I can't help solve the problem, only narrow down what it causing it (i.e a specific wav file might be damaged, in an unusual format etc etc).
  • Seems to be a variety of sounds. Selected shotgun and fired. Debug level 2 gives this:
    B_ActivateContext: Deactivating context "console".
    Sfx_Cache: Caching sound 2 (shotgn).

    Then the game exits.
  • I found a way round this, but it involved downloading a WAD based version of the HQ sound pack. Is this because the current main branch does not support the packaging in the pack available from http://dengine.net/addons ? If so, what's the best solution for everyone - can the pack be hacked or can the packaging support be added?
  • As far as I'm aware the two packs are identical content wise, the only difference being the format of the packaging (though I may be wrong).
