Segmentation Violation from no apparent reason

Hi. I've just downloaded and installed the newest Doomsday 1.9.0-beta6.9. Everything is fine until I choose the starting episode in Doom. Right after I press enter on the episode selection menu, I get the Segmentation Violation error and the engine crashes to desktop. My OS is Win7 x64. The log states as follows:

  • We'll need to know a bit more about your install. Was this an upgrade and if so,from which version and did you uninstall first?
  • Hello. So here are the details:
    - I'm trying to launch vanilla Doom.
    - The error occured on a new installation of Doomsday 1.9.0-beta6.9
    - I uninstalled it and installed Doomsday 1.8.6. That didn't work either. The problem here was with apparently missing gIBSP utility:
    gIBSP utility not found!
    Please make sure that Doomsday is installed correctly!
    Doomsday will run without additional gIBSP map data but you may encounter graphics bugs and/or performance degradation!
    It runs the game but crashes when I press enter on the "Choose episode" menu with:
    P_Init: Init Playloop state.
    HU_Init: Setting up heads up display.
    ST_Init: Init status bar.
    M_Init: Init miscellaneous info.

    W_GetNumForName: M_NMARE not found!
    ...

    PS. I've tried launching Ultimate Doom via both 1.8.6 and 1.9.0-beta6.9 and... it worked. Is it possible that the problem lied within the game files of vanilla Doom?
  • Yes indeed it does sound to be a problem with your original game data files. M_NMARE is a graphic used in the game menu that should be present in any version of DOOM. Where do you get your data files from? It may be they have been corrupted at some point, so try to copy them again from your original media/download.

    Alternatively it could be that your copy needs to be patched to the latest official version of DOOM.

    According to the Doom Wiki, Nightmare skill level appeared in version 1.2. Compare the MD5 or SHA1 of your Doom files with those listed here: DOOM.WAD DOOM.EXE

    If you cannot run doomsday caused by the missing nightmare skill, I can assume that you have Version 1.1 of the DOOM.WAD
    To upgrade your DOOM.WAD to the newest version (1.9) download and apply this patch: http://www.doomwadstation.com/doom_revi ... _19drp.exe

    After the installation of the needed update you can update your doom version to Ultimate doom. The needed patch can be found here:

  • You are right guys. The Doom version that has been lying on my HDD for centuries is actually v.1.1. So the problem has been solved.
