Help with 3d Models/add ons

I tried to install the texture pack found here that is for doomsday (the second one down), by placing the .pk3 file in doomsday/data/jdoom/auto, but I get an error whenever I try to play the game.

I am completely new to doomsday engine, but have spent a few hours trying to figure out where to download the most recent texture packs, and how to install them. The information doesn't seem easy to find, but I may just be looking in the wrong places...

If anyone could take the time to explain this process to me of how/where to obtain and install high-res textures and 3d models for doom, it would be greatly appreciated. I am running version 1.8.6 of doomengine.

That pack works only in doomsday 1.9.0-beta6 or higher.
either upgrade doomsday to the latest beta or use the zd-dhtp-20100114.pk3 download
  • Thanks, I didn't realize that I didn't have the most recent version!

I got the 3d models and hi-res textures to work.. awesome. However, the game runs noticeably slower when the 3d models are enabled, although I have a decent rig.. Any suggestions to get the game running faster with the 3d models enabled, or do I just need a better pc?

    Here are my specs:

    Processor - Intel Core2 Duo T7700 @2.40GHz
    RAM - 790 MHz, 2.00 GB RAM
Video Card - NVidia Quadro NVS 140M

I don't have an awesome setup, but I thought it would meet or exceed whatever requirements there are to use 3d models in doom.. Is that just the way it is, or can it be improved? Thanks again for the help.

ps - Where exactly are you supposed to find the most recent versions of the texture and resource packs? I noticed that your "addons" section is down... Is that pretty much the official resource for this stuff anymore? Is it going to be back up in the foreseeable future?

First thing to try is disabling Nvidia's "Threaded optimization" via the NVIDIA Control Panel. Best to create a new profile for Doomsday so it doesn't affect all games.

The texture pack is available here: http://forums.yaa.dk/viewforum.php?f=32
The 3D model pack is available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/deng/files/ (Resources > jDoom - you need both the resource pack and the resource pack manifest)
I noticed that your "addons" section is down...
I'll direct you to this thread if I may.
  • Wow, disabling "threaded optimization" made an incredible difference! How do you know that disabling that feature would improve the performance so much? I wonder why it does? Stuff like that should be included in the readme.. that makes the difference between a mundane playing experience and an awesome one! Thanks!

Also, thanks to everyone who put in the insane amount of work for all of the models, textures, etc. I am a long-time doom fan, and it is pretty amazing to see 3-dimensional bad guys walking around in the actual game.. I mean, that's pretty crazy.. Also, I'm loving the blood splatter effect. The only thing that could be better is if there was a high-resolution sprite pack.. that would be sweet! I read up on a project to do just that, but I didn't get the impression that there had been any releases as of yet..

edit: If I could ask yet another question, how do you customize exactly what you want to be 3D or not within the resource pack? I have seen some screenshots of the menu where people can expand the resource pack and view individual objects, like ammo, weapons, enemies, and they can choose whether or not to individually enable their 3D model or not. I can only just enable the whole resource pack, or not. Is there a way I can selectively enable what I want to within the resource pack?
