Music but no sound effects in 1.8.6 for windows

Title says it all. If I have it "show status of channels" through the deng audio control panel, I see them turn from yellow to white when a sound effect should be played, so I'm probably just missing a sound library or something.

    Probably should have mentioned it's for the doom series. Haven't tried hexen yet.
