Intro to surround sound?

I'm putting together a system with 5.1 surround sound and I thought I saw a few places that said Doomsday supports surround sound but I can't find much else about it. Is this supported or do I need some add-on or something extra? Alternatively, if anyone knows of a doom source port out there that does support 5.1 surround, I could use all the advice I can get.

    Doomsday supports 3D audio with some of the audio plugins, like FMOD, DirectSound/EAX, and OpenAL. FMOD specifically supports surround sound output, however you will need to use a special command line option to specify the appropriate speaker mode:
    • -speaker51 for 5.1 surround sound
    • -speaker71 for 7.1 surround sound
    • -speakerprologic: "Stereo compatible output, embedded with surround information. SRS 5.1/Prologic/Prologic2 decoders will split the signal into a 5.1 speaker set-up or SRS virtual surround will decode into a 2-speaker/headphone setup."
