Explosion effect and other impact effects disappear in 1.14

After playing Doom in the new stable version 1.14 (with my favorite resource pack - jdrp101+11a+fixes.pk3) for a while, I noticed that the explosion animations didn't show anymore. Rockets look like they go through walls and barrels just disappear from one frame to the next.

After looking further into the issue I found out you can 'stress' the engine by shooting a lot of rockets into walls, and then suddenly it just stops showing the explosion animation and other impact animations (like shotgun shots ricocheting from the wall etc.). The issue always goes away when I start a new level. Although for some levels - like TNT lvl 02 - the problem is there right from the start.

I don't know if this is a problem with the resource-pack (jdrp101+11a+fixes.pk3), the engine itself or related to my system resources. But I do know it never happened in older versions (I upgraded from 1.12). As you can see in the DOOMSDAY.OUT, the engine gives a lot of warnings when loading the resource pack but it also did that in older versions of Doomsday.

Is anyone else seeing this issue? Any help will be much appriciated.

  • Yes, it was gone in that unstable too. However I wonder if anyone notices that the Hell Knight in the JDRP has a mixed up damage stage and the head of the baron of hell is swapped in the knight's place yet its body remains that of the Knight's before the hell knight reaches death. Funny when using the Sitter's spider mastermind, the final damage stage appears in the form of the spider having its head glow yellow yet it has no visible damage in the final damage stage. perhaps 1.13 onward has had problems with damage stages. I didn't seem to have this problem many month ago when I played with... I think it was sometime around 1.11. no problem with that back then.
  • If I recall, the model initialization code was redone sometime after 1.11 so it could be a new regression.

    Please do report any bug you encounter, irrespective of how trivial or minor it might seem to you. If you report it then it stands a far better chance of actually being fixed (we may not have even noticed it).
  • I'm seeing the Hell Knight with the head of the baron too. Can't comment on the spider mastermind as I don't have that model.

    Turns out this was caused by a bug in the resource system, which failed to respect the model-internal skin indices when building the #skin => Texture lookup table for the model. This issue has been fixed for the next unstable build (commit: e4c9618c).
  • That is good. Curious...if it wasn't fixed and new models replaced them in the near future with the new engine, would that have had any effect (would the problem carry over to the new models somehow)?
  • That problem affected all models built for use with the version 1 model renderer. Had it not been fixed it would have continued to effect all models built for that version of the model renderer.
