old savegames

edited 2014 Mar 2 in Technical Support
i have old savegame files (dsg) that are maybe 7 years old which do not work in my current doomsday version (>> error mssg, + kicked back to win7), back then there was no console popping up after starting the game in the deng gui, what can i do ? is there only a handful versions from that time ago or is it too much different builds and versions for a trial and error test run, is there even a place where you can dl 6 or 7 yr old versions?

  • I'd be interested to see why those saved games are not loadable. If you could upload them some place, or email them, I'll take a look.
  • DoomSav0.dsg

    error message

    error.txt

"uncaught exception during loop iteration"missing material error-no material is bound
  • Typically that sort of error occurs when trying to load a savegame without all the addons loaded at the time it was made. Presently the save system is not robust enough to deal with that situation.

Unless you can remember which addon(s) you had loaded at the time, you won't be able to use those savegames (this info is not recorded).
  • thanks for the info

by addons you mean wads ? other than that, i do not alter anything usually, just let everything in DEFAULT settings, and i can't remember i loaded some fancy additions actually

btw i just tested some older versions of zdoom and doomsday vs some newer and i noticed older versions play much faster (faster movement + controls reactions) so i will not use newer builds and stay with older versions , also of course vary in sharpness/resolotion/ lighting , some appear much darker than others
  • looked it up and theres even only version that existed all these years ----version 1.8.6---- , thought it was much more complicated than that ;) my guess is that this will be my prefered version
  • Looking at error.txt I noticed that log was produced by version 1.9.8 which is now roughly two years old. The current version is 1.13 and much has changed since then. Even more so when compared with version 1.8.6 which is now over nine years old.

Comparing performance between the current version and much older versions it is important to note that newer versions are doing more to improve the fidelity of the experience. More rendering effects, generally improved quality, antialising enabled by default, etc, etc... In order to do a fair side by side comparison it is necessary to disable newer effects, reduce quality settings and otherwise ensure you are using the same configuration.

By all means continue to use whichever version you feel most happy with, however :)
