Freedoom IWAD file names

edited 2014 Jan 14 in Technical Support
After a discussion that has been going on Doomworld, it was decided that the next Freedoom file names will become, as default, the following:

freedoom1.wad (refers to the Phase 1)
freedoom2.wad (refers to the Phase 2)

More details behind the reasoning of the name change here: https://github.com/freedoom/freedoom/co ... ecb236ab95 [^]

I don't recall Doomsday Engine having support for Freedoom, if not, it should. You should make these file names the default ones recognized by the port.

Comments

  • For reference, we have an issue about Freedoom support in the Tracker: http://tracker.skyjake.fi/issues/1429
  • If the Freedoom project didn't rely on Boom features we would likely have added support long before now. I do not understand how the Freedoom project can justify using features not present in the original game engine; it makes zero sense given the goals of the project.
  • Freedoom is Boom compatible only, FreeDM is vanilla only, though.

Curiously, some of their sprites and textures fits very well with doomsday's renderer.
  • From this conversation it appears that the lack of FreeDoom support has been a technical problem and not a legal problem. I was under the impression (which now appears to be false) that the DoomDay Engine required only official ID software Wad Files because of the licensing agreement that accompanied the release of the source code.

    Any comments?
  • The lack of Freedoom support is indeed a technical issue: Doomsday's Doom plugin doesn't support all the necessary Boom map features.
