Not a newbie but a newbie (help with installation)

edited 2013 Dec 4 in Technical Support
Hi
Just found this site and it seems very well run.
My problem is I suffer from a shocking memory :(
Doom is my favourite single player of all time especially Doom II
Last year the game just stopped working so I uninstalled it.
I decided today I'd love my fix of Doom again and when I went to try I failed.
I d/l the Doomsday engine but then I'm stuck.
I want to play with the jDoom version (3D models hi res graphics)
Can someone please please do a step by step for this old timer?
Ty

  • first off what is your OS? as that can have a huge affect on what instructions you will receive. the windows instructions are strait forward. Step 1: download and install doomsday. Step 2: point doomsday to your doom/doom2 iwads. Step 3: download the Jdoom resource pack if it's still called that and the doom hi-res texture pack. Step 4: copy said resource packs to .../doomsday/snowberry/addons. Step 5: load doomsday and make sure that all the packs in the addons section are checked for said game. Step 6: play. side note if you have win xp you will not be able to play :(. you can find all the packs here http://dengine.net/addons
  • iOS7, I d/l and installed and ran Doomsday but it never initialises, all that happens is the doomsday shell/logo? appears in my task bar, I def have the correct wads so not sure how to point (step 2) Doomsday to the wads?
  • INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:

Place the jdrp.box folder in C:\Program Files\Doomsday\Snowberry\Addons (if this is where you installed Doomsday)

I have done the above, but doomsday simply won't run, as I said I played on this pc set up b4.
  • i take it your using an ipad? if so doomsday is not compatible with it only mac, PC, and Linux. as the ios is apples mobile os so mac apps will not work on it.
  • lol no a PC desktop 64 bit windows 7, sorry for the confusion!
I use apple a lot and just forgot my bearings for a minute.
  • It might be that classic Snowberry bug; try highlighting the Snowberry icon in the task bar and selecting maximize?
  • Ok I finally got Doomsday to open, I uninstalled completely and just reinstalled.
I had Doom, Doom II, and Plutonia & TNT in my Doom 3 folder....
I just have to find the screen resolution size and import the hi res models and I should be good to go.
    Thanks for all help.
  • I have everything perfect except I've somehow knocked off my weapon model....I can't see it! I'd prefer if I could.
A;so this version of Doomsday is far superior to the one I played b4, it's fantastic.
  • I still can't find where to make weapon appear??
  • Maybe this helps? viewtopic.php?f=7&t=848&p=5215&hilit=weapon+offset#p5215

(Note there are several threads here at the forums about HUD model positioning/scaling configuration.)
  • Thanks for the reply :)
Where do I find the folder that contains these cvars?
that post you linked is 2 years old so I am guessing the update you suggested never happened?
  • You were right if I go into console and change to 4:3 I can see my weapon but ofc I would prefer to use my own native resolution as when I have tabbed out to my desktop as in like now I now have the incorrect video settings.
  • Rewriting the model renderer is currently scheduled for Doomsday 1.14, which according to our release cycle should happen somewhere near the end of March 2014.

As of right now the only solution to this issue is to manually apply a suitable offset to the HUD models... However, this can be done quite painlessly by opening the console and then tweaking the values until they are positioned appropriately for your display.
  • Hi Danij
I know how to open the console (whoo-hoo!)
But I don't know what to type in (tweaking the values as you said)
  • The Doomsday wiki should prove to be helpful here. See the console article for an introduction and the rend-hud-fov-shift article specifically (note that the same information is also available from the console -- enter "help rend-hud-fov-shift"). The console itself will also try to assist if you enter something it doesn't understand.

When changing the value of a cvar, enter the name of the cvar you want to change followed by the value you want to change it to. For example:
    rend-hud-fov-shift 20

(Note that when searching the forums for information on a cvar it is necessary to replace hyphens with period characters. This is because phpBB considers a hypen as a word search delimiter)
  • DaniJ you're a star!
I ended up having a nice choice of 2 options, keeping the Hud (which I do love) and using 10 or 5 or removing it completely which is a nice different way to play.
    :)
  • Happy to help :)

BTW, a third option, given you like not having a HUD, is to make use of the "auto hide" features (see the HUD submenu from the game's own Options menu) which allows one to configure the HUD so that it is automatically revealed when key game events occur (such as when picking up some new goodies or upon taking damage).
  • aahhh ok :)
I have to say all the versions I ever played this is beyond doubt to be the finest, I even played the 32x version on the megadrive!
  • Re: DOOM on 32X

Now that takes me back... Although I've been playing DOOM on PC since the original shareware release via BBS, I have many fond memories of the 32X port. Despite the fact it was a pretty poor rendition, the bastardized music still holds a certain nostalgic charm for me.

Thanks for the kind words. Its always nice to hear that people are enjoying our work.
