Version 1.11.1 - Any way to load old save-games?

edited 2013 Aug 29 in Technical Support
Yesterday, I installed Doomsday v1.11.1 over v1.8.6 (having not played any old id games for a few years), and discovered that it no longer recognises my old save-games.
I'm running 64-bit Windows 7.

Where are save-game files stored now?
Is there any way to make Doomsday load old save-games?

  • Doomsday can load save games from both the original Dos Doom and older versions of Doomsday. However, a bug means that 1.8.6 saves currently crash 1.11 with a seg fault, when it tries to load them.

Of course, 1.8.6 is ancient; it's more than 8.5 years old now. Hence it is possible Deng Team may choose to draw a line, rather than fix it (i.e fix the crash but drop support for loading save games of such age).

With such an old version of Doomsday, it is also not wise to try to upgrade an existing installation. One should instead do a complete re-install. That said, a re-install is always preferable to upgrading.

By default, Dday 1.8.6's Kickstart launcher stores your savegames in; 'Doomsday folder'/run/'gamename'/savegame'.

Dday 1.11's Snowberry launcher by default stores your savegames in; 'user'/My Doucments/Doomsday Frontend/runtime/savegame/'game name''.
  • Thanks for the answer. Guess I'll just re-install.
No great loss on the save-games. I was looking to continue a Hexen DK game I'd started a few days ago and had only played one level in.

I wasn't seeing any "Doomsday Frontend" folder in My Documents, and I just figured out why.
I moved "My Documents" to a different drive ages ago. It seems Doomsday expects it to be on C drive even though Windows supports moving it.
