Using my PS2 controller with Doomsday

edited 2013 Jun 9 in Technical Support
Seems when I enable the joystick in the console and then try to set the keys in the controls section from the main menu, the moment I hit the enter key to select a function, it will not give me any time to select a key as if the enter key was being held down when it isn't (for a 20th of a second, I see the message asking which key I want to enter) and it will display 'joy-axis07' anytime I select any function on the list. Will this force me to resort to using a game profiler instead?

Also, I wonder if there is an option to reset defaults for the keys if they get messed up.

I've personally tried my PS2 Dualshock pad on Dday without issue (and just tested again), so I'm afraid I can't help you with that one beyond saying check your converter and/or pad is properly plugged in (i.e not half plugged in) and the OS drivers correct?

Sounds like "axis 7" (whichever that is) is not in a centered/zero position when you're doing the bindings. Perhaps you need to do the good old "rotate sticks around a few times" calibration (when the PS2 controller is in Analog mode) before attempting the bindings. Or then try the same in Digital mode?

You might also try scaling axis 7 to zero forcibly using "input-joy-axis07-scale 0", effectively disabling that axis. Also possible is to try increasing the deadzone of that axis with the corresponding deadzone cvar.
  • I did that and when pressing 'enter' it then says 'axis 08'. I should also mention that when the joystick is activated in the input options (console GUI menu), when I press a mouse key instead of enter, it also has the effect of acting like it is held down, or in other words, one click both opens and closes the 'key choice' selection at the same time (happens so quickly). Pressing enter has that effect with the gamepad. As if pressing enter once is like pressing it twice to open and close the selection at the same time. I shut of the joystick option and press enter and it acts normally (one press opens the selection key option).

I might have to resort to using the other gamepad that has only a pad and no analog stick, or maybe using Pinnicle game profiler with the ps2 controller. Maybe that would be less trouble and ensure it will work? I might have no choice, but I am thankful for your guy's advice.
  • one thing i would use is motionjoy with a ps3 controller and have had no problems with game tho i have not tested it with doomsday.
  • My ps2 controller works fine with Freespace Open (Freespace 2 port). funny that after having that problem with Doomsday, I went to test it in Freespace, and in mission, it acted like the stick was stuck, so the ship you fly from 1st person view kept spinning. But then the problem went away in Freespace after unplugging then plugging back in, but no matter what, the problem remains for Doomsday. The controller is from 2002 and is not brand new though.
  • ah maybe doomsday has problems with the ps2 controller and or software to run it?
  • it works when I use pinnicle game profiler to map keys instead of using doomsday's joystick interface.
  • Occasionally in a first or third person game, the stick might act like it is barely stuck, causing slow walking of the playable character, including in Doom, but is remedied randomly when pushed a certain way, so I ordered a new PS2 controller online.
