Doomsday 1.9.8 Released

The stable version 1.9.8 (build 500) is now available.

In 1.9.8 we have refactored some of the core components of the engine. We are no longer relying on the rather limited SDL framework for operating system services. Instead, we are now using Qt and C++. This should bear important long-term benefits as we now have a lot of functionality at our disposal in a platform-independent manner. We have also refactored the map data structures with higher-precision coordinates and improved the BSP builder in preparation for the future.

  • Yes, quick progress. At this rate, we will probaly hit at least 2.0 before the end of the year, especially since I read that qmake should speed up progress and I assume C++ will too.

    There seems to be an issue with Dday 1.9.8 losing focus during game/engine startup.

    When you aren't loading any add-ons, it also loses and gains focus right at the end of game/engine startup. If you are loading a number of add-ons, it will instead lose and gain focus during loading them; coincidently, I'm also having issues with some model add-ons not appearing in game...

    Really? I don't notice anything wrong.
  • I recommend updating your graphics card drivers to the latest possible release date(ex: Radeon HD 6870 Catylist Control Center 12.4 released last month) assuming you are not using a laptop in which case I cannot help you
  • Hi there, I'm new here but I've been using Doomsady on and off for a while now. Very impressive to say the least. Anyway, what's the diffrence between 1.9.8 build 500 and 1.9.9 build 504?

    I thought 1.9.8 was the latest but I found a 1.9.9.
  • Build 504 is the first unstable build of what will ultimately become the 1.9.9 stable release. We regularly release builds of in-development versions so that users can road test them and assist in bug testing, for example.

    The build repository details the changes for each build e.g., change log for Build 504.

  • Essentially, yes. I suggest you have a look at the automated build system article at the wiki for more details.

    In general I would recommend the latest stable release for every day use.

    I actually have both running on my system ATM. Since they both use the same config file, its' easy to switch between them and look for differences.

    Thanks for showing me that there are a few bugs that I'd like to report, but I'm unsure how to use that tool or even if the bugs I'm thinking of have even been reported. Is it okay to use the forms instead?
  • You can search for existing bugs using that interface. We would much prefer that users submit reports directly to the bug tracker. Submitting them here in the forum either results in more work for someone else (usually a Deng Team developer) or your report will end up being lost or forgotten about.

    Submitting a bug report via the tracker at Source Forge is pretty straight forward, take a little time to understand the interface and then when writing the report, ask yourself what we would need to do to reproduce the problem and then document it.

    Yes lol I did it. I did a quick search, I'm not sure if the bugs I posted have already been addressed but I think it should be fine.
  • Strange that recently with 1.9.8 stable and above, when loading a map, I can see the loading wheel freeze for a split second multiple times through the loading process and it takes longer to load a map. Also, when I'm in the map and entering a new room or open area for the first time, it hangs anywhere between 1 to 3 seconds. If I die and re-enter those same rooms or areas, it does not hang. But if I exit the game and then re-enter those areas, it will hang again when opening a door or entering open spaces. It never did this before, and when starting 1,9,8 for the first time, it didn't do this.

    When using the first unstable, it started doing this, but then I deleted it and reverted to 1.9.8 stable. The problem remained, so then I deleted the frontend. But the problem remains regardless, so today I downloaded the newest unstable and still the problem exists.

  • I doubt that this is an issue with texture uploads in Doomsday. Have you recently updated your video driver or changed anything on your system? Is anyone else experiencing similar issues? If so what is your system configuration?

    If this were a common general issue I would have expected we'd know about it and be inundated with complaints.

    I also noticed the rather large number of add-on errors in your log. Have you tried disabling the clearly broken ones?
  • Never had a problem wth the addons before, but it appears to be the model and texture folder I copied under my data folder. But it was never a problem before. I did update my Radeon 6870 driver lately to the latest one. I don't see why that would be a problem. I updated my driver because someone in another thread told Vermil to update to the latest drivers. Why is it that the models and textures never caused this before? I'm not going to give up using them.
  • I'm not suggesting you give up on them but it surely wouldn't hurt to determine what the problem is and then try to fix it. This stuff isn't complicated, its just a mater of fixing file paths in the altered versions of the add-ons you are using.
  • Well, it might not be that easy, so I might just have to deal with the hanging. It never did that before, so the latest stable must have changed something. And it is pointing to the correct path and it is finding the deds, regardless of it saying it cannot find those deds.
  • I rolled back my driver and it solved the problem. I am using the addons and all and it is loading and running smoothly. So maybe it wasn't the result of what appeared like a broken addon? I wonder why the driver caused the models and textures to slow down the level loading and caused it to hang like it did.

    :\ ... Sorry, I forgot to mention that it says on the AMD website that you should uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones. Other suggestions I would recommend would be to (1) check your hard drive for errors and/or defrag it, (2) scan your computer for viruses, malware, etc., or (3) check for updated drivers on the other components other than your video card.

    By the way, I did uninstall the driver using both the Catalyst uninstall and device manager at the time. What was strange is that when downloading the new CCC, it didn't show the driver in the list of downloaded items. I restarted the computer and then maybe I clicked 'update driver' in device manage and then Catalyst was showing the driver unlike before. I read about why it wasn't being displayed in the installation, etc, but it isn't memorable. The made it a hassle just to update a driver. Modern day computers should be morre automated and it shouldn't be difficult since it is 2012.
  • What's the qmake parameter required to set libdir or DENG_LIB_DIR? Using `qmake DENG_LIB_DIR=/usr/lib/doomsday` has no effect. (And I had hoped not having to modify config_unix.pri)
  • I'm guessing PREFIX is what you want(?), it is used as the base for both DENG_BIN_DIR and DENG_LIB_DIR on Unix.
