very low volume item-pickup sounds?

Doom.wad from doom95 in use
very quiet item-pickup sounds, all other sounds normal levels.
occurs using both "FMOD Ex" and "SDL_mixer" sound drivers.
thisproblem was mentioned here a couple years ago but only using "SDL _mixer":

is this problem known to plague "FMOD Ex" as well or?
