Doomsday problem with r2wolfd2.zip

It's a DOOM2-mod called "Return To Castle Wolfenstein II".
It has to be installed in DOOM2 via DOS-Box.
After that you have 5 files to use with Doomsday: r2char.wad, r2levels.wad, r2sprite.wad, r2stg.wad and wolf.deh
They work fine with Doomsday.
But if you rename these files, the mod doesn't work anymore!
For exemple renaming them to 1.wad, 2.wad, 3.wad, 4.wad and 5.deh.
However as long as the original names of these files are part of the renamed ones, it works!
Pretty strange! Any suggestions?

What do you mean by this, exactly?

    Also, why rename the files?

All the wads I use are renamed in order to find the mod I want to play. With 8-digits files it is not possible to recognize exactly the name of a mod. That's why "r2char.wad" i.e. becomes "D2-Wolfendoom - Return To Castle Wolfenstein 1.wad". Same for the other files with 2, 3, 4 and 5. But in order to make them work with Doomsday I had to rename them to "D2-Wolfendoom - Return To Castle Wolfenstein 1R2CHAR.wad, D2-Wolfendoom - Return To Castle Wolfenstein 2R2LEVELS.wad, D2-Wolfendoom - Return To Castle Wolfenstein 3R2SPRITE.wad, D2-Wolfendoom - Return To Castle Wolfenstein 4R2STG.wad and D2-Wolfendoom - Return To Castle Wolfenstein 5WOLF.deh!
You see I have to use the original file-names too! That's my problem.
Hundreds of other renamed files work like a charm with Doomsday!
    And I don't get it! :-(
I forgot to mention that I use Doomsday 2.3!
