JDRP stopped working recently

Hello. For the past few months, I've been using the JDRP 3D model pack to play Shareware Doom in 3D, and it's been working great. But sometime in the past week, I must have done something wrong with Doomsday, because yesterday I noticed that the pack is making the game crash. I've tried using older versions of the engine, I've tried using a copy of the pack I made a few weeks ago, I've even tried using Doomsday on a different iMac, but it's always the same. I found after pulling files out of the jdrp.box, that the problem only occurs when you put more than about twenty mods together at the same time, partially depending on filesize, and putting too many mods in at once crashes the map loader. It's like there's a limiter now preventing a certain amount of 3D material from being used in the engine at once, and I can't figure out what's different about it now than it was a week ago when it was still working. My current OS X is 10.8.3, and my iMac has 12 GB RAM, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, & AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB.

  • A crash bug with models appeared in unstable build 860, that has yet to be fixed by Deng team.
  • That did it! Thank you, apparently the reason I couldn't pinpoint the problem is because I didn't close Doomsday after I had installed older versions, so it still crashed even when the older builds were installed. But after installing Build 857 and restarting Doomsday, Shareware Doom works just fine with the 3D model pack.
  • I've now located and fixed the cause for this crash. It will be included in tomorrow's unstable build, along with the new ui-framework changes.
  • I'm getting crashing with models after few minutes of playing with builds 892 and 895. Without models, no crashing. Also that build 857 works ok with models..
  • These unstables may be a little slower and cause a crash 1 minute into a level. Of course they aren't called unstable for no reason :P Maybe more optimization is needed.
  • Well from build 870 to build 891 doomsday (TNT wad) just crash on loading without reason text.
    In build 892 & 895 doomsday (TNT wad) hangs after 1 min of playing..
    All addons from http://dengine.net/addons are on.
    All builds installed in pure mode (full uninstall old ver.).
    So for now I can use only stable build 869..
    Sorry - no time for now to disable each addon in each build to locate craches & hangs..-((

    Please try the latest build 898. I made a few more fixes related to accessing submodels.

  • Yes that is correct. The number of submodels remains unlimited.
  • It seems to crash when the amount of submodels used by the object changes. With some objects it seems to crash every time, and with some others it crashes sometimes. Barrel explosion crashed all the time, so I experimented with it a bit. It used 2 submodels in the spawn states, but 1 submodel in the explosion. I changed it to use 2 submodels in the explosion and it stopped crashing.
  • Whenever I use the recent unstable builds, about 2 minutes into any level, it will freeze. Of course I notice that when using some of the sitter monster models or firing a weapon, at times, it will hang for a split second. I use the last stable build and no freezing occurs, but there is some of that hanging when the game first draws certain models and effects, but then once it gets into memory, it is smoother.

  • Just noticed that some models are not showing, because some of the definitions have \ in their Modelpath or File. No wonder I've been bumping into some invisible obstacles.. I thought they were some mapping errors, until I came across an object with a dynamic light. All the models with / in their paths are visible.
  • Too bad most (if not all) computer programs aren't capable of sensing that such small syntax errors are present and cannot self correct. More programs should be able to self diagnose and correct themselves. In 2013, this should be the case.

  • The slash issue is simply a bug. Logic is already in place to handle this but its not being applied.
  • Indeed Gary, you neglect that Dday has been handling slashes in both directions up until this recent bug. Else this issue would have arisen back when the models were made :)
  • Hi there, I've done some searching here but I cannot seem to find the answer. Basically, I'm using latest Doomsday download from here on my Mac and with the Doom2 game (from my original Mac CDs). Now, I've downloaded some extras like the highres textures and everything is great. Then I downloaded the jdrp from the addons page here - now everything seems to work BUT the weapons aren't viewable. The weapon you're carrying I mean... Very odd as everything else works perfect (and looks amazing!)

    Of course, in the snowberry app I can tick off the HUD Weapons and play without those by getting the old gfx back for this one part of JDRP.. but that kinda seems like a sucky idea now. So, am I missing something daft here?? :} I'm now starting to think it's not a bug but it's meant to be this way lol

    Today's extra build 917, once it's available, should resolve these model related issues. Let us know how it goes.
  • So far no crashes with 917 and models, and both slashes work.
