Why did doomsday quit working?

edited 2015 Dec 5 in Technical Support
I have been using it to run hexen. It woked fine until I was about halfway through the seven portals level. When I was coming back from a hub it crashed. Now it won't even launch. I have windows 10 I5 quad core 4gig ram and an hdcard. My copy of hexen is the cd I bought years ago.

Here is the doomsday.out file you asked for:

Any help is much appreciated as I have enjoyed the game so far and would hate to not be able to finish. I really like the doomsday experience and appreciate everything you have done. I just hope this is an easy fix.

Thanks

Michael

Could you share your save files so we can check if they are still ok?

To clarify, the 1.15.5 version was working for you before the crash? Did the launching stop working immediately after the crash?

You could also try launching with the -vvv (maximum verbosity) option to see if there is any additional information printed to the doomsday.out. Please zip the log file since it will be quite a bit larger.
  • Yes I was using the 1.15.5 version and it did stop launching immediately. Your forum won't let me upload the save files. Any other ideas? I tried to upload it as a txt file. Hope it worked.

Sorry about that, I've now allowed attaching ".save" files here.

I'll see if your save file is working for me.

How about that -vvv option, though? That might reveal more information about exactly where it is crashing during startup. In the Frontend, you can add that into Settings > Developer > Custom options.
  • Okay here it is. Wow it was big. This is the first file I ever zipped so hope its ok. I used 7zip as its the best I know of.
  • The last line from the log is "OculusRift: Initializing LibOVR", which might be a valid clue for us. Doomsday's Oculus code is a bit outdated now, I'll disable it by default and we'll see if that makes any difference.
  • So get the latest build and install over what I have and trey again? Or is there a way to turn it off now and try?
  • Unfortunately the current build doesn't allow disabling it. The next unstable build (tomorrow's) will disable LibOVR, as will the next stable build (on Tuesday, December 1st).

If you are not using any resource packs, the unstable builds might work fine for you (the Frontend has been removed and it is currently not possible to easily load resource packs).
  • Just tried installing latest build in doomsday directory and it still fails to load. Will wait for next build. I starting using vavoom as it has free mouse look and all. I hope you can fix it as I prefer the movement of doomsday.
  • Please post your doomsday.out - it may contain more clues as to what is going wrong.

Hmm, I'm not immediately coming up with other ideas. Your OpenGL drivers are a bit on the older side, though. It would be informative to know if an older release of Doomsday, e..g, 1.10.4, would work better for you.
    Version: 2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2900
    Renderer: Intel(R) HD Graphics

  • Tried to get the build 1794 just posted and the windows link don't work. Any idea when it will? The 1.15 build worked until the sudden crash so I don't think its the drivers.
  • I bet this is an older problem. Dday would open but not be seen, it would show an x or something like that in the upper left corner of the screen but only if you moved your cursor up there. it would open in a minimal state that could not be opened unless you chose to open full screen, check your task bar, and see if it is there. If so, right click and choose to open it fullscreen, I think that was the option.
  • Thanks for the thought but that's not it. I double click doomsday and it loads and shows the circle fill up, then does the circle again and gets to the end and crashes with the old this program has stopped working. And like I said before all was fine until near the end of the 7 portals level and then what I already described with the window saying this program has stopped working.

Any idea on when the windows download of the new version will work?
  • It could be worth a try to see if Doomsday would successfully start with a default configuration. The easiest way to achieve this is to rename your "{user}\Documents\Doomsday Frontend\runtime\" folder to something else, so Doomsday will recreate it with a default config. Be careful, though, not to delete the old runtime folder because it contains all your savegames.

If the new runtime folder works better, you can copy the savegames from the renamed runtime folder into the new one.

A new stable Windows build should now be available (1.15.6).
  • I tried the new build. It crashed until the third try and suddenly worked. Its very slow though. Played Deathkings for Hexen and man is it slow.

Edit: As a side note I was wondering if you could help with Vavoom. I can get hexen to work but the addon deathkings is another story. The site is dead and thus the instructions are gone too. I have tried to use the launcher for it but no success. Can you tell me what to put in what window to make it work? I have both wads in the directory. I have tried putting in the files window -file hexdd.wad and even putting -hexen in front too but no go. Any help on the speed issue or Vavoom is greatly appreciated.

Edit 2: I took your suggestion of installing doomsday 10.4 and it loads and runs perfectly. I think I may keep this version as it appears to solve all issues. Thank you so much.
  • it's a wad file so load it like any other as it's not a game in and of it's self as it dose requier hexen to play so you need to have it load like it was a lvl/gfx wad witch the port your listing i would just drag and drop or make a shortcut and use the -file command.
  • As I stated above I tried that first with no success. But no worries as I got the older doomsday version working perfectly for both now. Thanks for trying to help
